Description

Position Summary:
Under clinical supervision by the Salt River Clinic Medical Director and administrative direction by the Director of Health Services in the Health and Human Services Department, provides clinical and preventive services as a Pediatrician in the Salt River Clinic and/or any other health care setting in the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community.  This job class is treated as an FLSA exempt.
 
Essential Functions:
(Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may vary among positions, but may include the following tasks, knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics.  This list of tasks is ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY and is not intended to be a comprehensive listing of tasks performed by all positions in this classification.)

Examples of Tasks

Tasks:
1.  Provides clinical and preventive services as a primary care provider to children between the ages of 0 to 21 years of age.  Abides by the highest standards in clinical treatment of patients and service to patients and their families.  Uses the Early Periodic Screening, Diagnosis and Treatment (EPSDT) guidelines as the standard of care for children served.

2.  Assists and provides guidance to the Director of Health Services and the Medical Director for the expansion and improvement of all child health services to the SRPMIC.  Participates on committees to address emerging issues in child health as requested.

3.  Assist in the development of policies, procedures and operations manuals for satellite child health service sites, including Community school-based clinics.

4.  Monitors SRPMIC-specific child health data in order to track trends in the child health care and health status indicators for Community children.

5.  Stays current on emerging issues, technologies and research in the areas of child health care and disease, which affect the SRPMIC.  Obtains continuing medical education credits required annually of pediatricians.  Maintains all professional licenses and credentials required of a physician by the SRPMIC.
 
6.  Consults with the Division Chief and other health professionals.

7.  Prepares administrative reports as required  

8.  Maintains an upbeat demeanor, positive attitude, warm personality and non-threatening manner around children that helps to put them at ease during their medical exam, which can be a very stressful situation for them.

9.  Performs other job-related duties as assigned to maintain and enhance program and departmental operations.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other Characteristics:

  • Knowledge of the culture, customs, traditions, history and government of the Salt River Pima- Maricopa Indian Community.
  • Knowledge of resources within and outside the Community.
  • Knowledge of clinical care practices for children between the ages of 0 and 21 years of age.
  • Knowledge of disease processes and co-morbidities common in American Indian children.
  • Knowledge of chemical dependency issues in families and children.
  • Knowledge of mental health issues in families and children.
  • Knowledge of Type II diabetes and its impact on SRPMIC children.
  • Knowledge of epidemiology, statistics and research methodologies.
  • Knowledge of public health problems and practices.
  • Knowledge of health benefits and health care coverage.
  • Knowledge of the Indian Health Service and all other sources of care for American Indians.
  • Knowledge of health education methods and techniques.
  • Knowledge of principles of patient-centered and family-centered health care.
  • Knowledge of concepts and principles of practice of school-based health care and community health services.
  • Knowledge of pharmaceutical therapies, existing and emerging.
  • Knowledge of emerging medical therapies.
 
  • Skill in working with American Indian patients and their families.
  • Skill in communicating with children of all ages, particularly in a stressful setting for them such as a medical exam.
  • Skill in communicating with the family members of a sick child.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with health care providers, resource agencies, Tribal officials, staff, patient’s families and members of the Community.
  • Skill in working within a community clinic setting and other satellite community health care settings.
  • Skill in educating and counseling a wide variety of patients and their families in the proper and safe use of medications at a level appropriate for their understanding.
  • Skill in developing policies, procedures and operations manuals for system improvement.
  • Skill in using personal computers, and related software, in order to fulfill job requirements.
  • Skill in maintaining accurate program records and compiling timely reports, according to prescribed standards.
  • Skilled in diagnosis and treatment.
  • Skills in performing medical, diagnostic procedures.
  • Skills in interpreting laboratory and other diagnostic test results.
  • Skilled in constructive problem resolution.
 
  • Ability to recognize symptoms and form appropriate treatment plans

  • Ability to work effectively with health care providers, resources agencies, Tribal officials, staff (professional and paraprofessional), members of the Community and particularly with patients and their families.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to operate a variety of standard office equipment including cellular phones, photocopiers, FAX machines, calculators, and personal computers.
Minimum Qualifications

Qualifications:
Education & Experience:  

  • Graduation from an accredited medical school and completion of an accredited Pediatric residency program plus 3 year experience practicing medicine in a community clinic setting.  
  • Board certification in pediatrics.  
  • Current Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) registration.  
  • License to practice medicine in the United State, but if hired, is required to obtain a license in Arizona before starting.  
  • Experience working in American Indian or Alaskan Native communities preferred.
 
Equivalency:  Any equivalent combination of education and experience that will allow the applicant to satisfactorily perform the duties of the job may be considered when filling the position.
Special Requirements

May be required to work beyond normal business hours including nights, weekends and holidays.

  • Employees in, and applicants applying for, jobs providing direct services to children are subject to the “Community Code of Ordinances”, Chapter 11, “Minors”, Article X. “Investigation of Persons Working With Children”.

Prior to hire as an employee, applicants will be subject to drug and alcohol testing. Will be required to pass a pre-employment background/fingerprint check. Employees are subject to random drug and alcohol testing.
